Donegal Meat Processors (DMP) operates out of a fully integrated, ultra-modern slaughter and de-boning facility, and processes in the region of 1500 cattle per week. Based on the banks of the river Foyle, in Ireland’s beautiful North West region of Donegal, DMP was opened in 1989 and currently employs approximately 180 employees.

In an area renowned for its prime suckler breeds, DMP sources cattle from its exclusive producer club – the recently revitalised Donegal Direct. With FQA status and optimal levels of animal welfare prerequisites for membership, Donegal Direct has a database of over 1500 members guaranteeing a 52 week-a-year supply of premium-reared cattle. The welfare of the animal is further taken into consideration within DMP’s lairage which is specifically designed with uphill curved races to achieve a stress-free animal movement flow.   

In 2003, the slaughter facility was completely refurbished and is now widely acclaimed as being one of the most modern in Europe. The employment of state of the art machinery not only improves the dressing of each carcase, but increases throughput and overall efficiencies.  It also reduces manual handling and human exertion – important factors in a health and safety conscious environment. Automatic grading has since been introduced to provide clinical verification of carcase fat levels and conformation, resulting in more consistent returns for farmers.

In the summer of 2006, a new mechanical de-boning system was installed in a complete overhaul of the de-boning process. We have seen a noticeable reduction in manual handling and a marked increase in production efficiencies. Ultimately, these changes will bring about benefits in terms of increased product life, while improved product yields will enable us to be more competitive in the marketplace.

DMP currently has the higher level EFSIS accreditation and is a member of the Bord Bia’s Quality Scheme. It supplies customers throughout Europe in the Retail, Manufacturing and Food service sectors. Recognised as a producer and supplier of quality beef primals, DMP has gained acclaim for its beef supply to the Dutch Retail giant Albert Heijn, in the form of its premium ‘Greenfield’s’ brand.
