Foyle Food Group had yet another successful year at Balmoral Show by hosting in partnership with Tesco NI the Tesco Best Steak Competition. This competition is a showcase of the ongoing partnership between the two companies and highlights the best steak from Foyle Food Group Producers from across the province.

Behind the scenes preparing for this competition is the Agricultural Team who commented “This competition is an excellent way for Foyle Food Group to showcase the farmers we work closely with. It also strengthens the partnership between ourselves and Tesco NI as they are one of the key buyers of our products. Both Tesco NI and Foyle Food Group believe in local people and local produce and that’s why a competition such as this is an excellent way to illustrate the ethos of the two companies whilst involving local farmers and their produce.”

Each year farmers are welcome to enter an animal for the competition which meets the criteria; 2 steaks are then taken from each carcase, independent taste testing is carried out on one of these before 8 finalists are selected to cook their steak live at the Tesco NI Stand within the Food Pavilion at Balmoral Show. It’s an exciting and popular competition as an audience from all over the isle gathers to cheer on their local farmer.

A local chef was on hand to support the finalists throughout the task whilst giving tips and cooking advice to the gathering audience. Each finalist cooked their steak to their liking before a panel of external judges sampled each and chose their winner.

This year’s winner of Tesco NI Best Steak Competition was awarded to Walter Boyd, from Clogher, Co Tyrone. Second place was awarded to Leslie Dunn from Bready, Co Tyrone, and finally, third place was awarded to Thomas McCarroll from Eskra, Omagh, Co Tyrone. All three winners were Aberdeen Angus.

“I am absolutely chuffed and over the moon that I won, I was completely surprised. It was an honor being a part of the competition and the whole atmosphere was good craic. As a GP I never expected to get through to the final as I only farm part time and to hear it was a unanimous decision has made me so proud. I must thank Foyle Food Group for the honors, they are a great company to work with”, said winner Walter Boyd.
